When you choose seasonal produce, you won’t feel that you’re on a diet for health. You will get the freshest and tastiest vegetables and fruits out there which you will surely enjoy. Using seasonal fruits and vegetables will also encourage you to be more creative in creating your meals.

Healthy eating means keeping a balanced diet. This means that you shouldn’t have vegetables or fruits all the time. Of course, you can eat meat! The Paleo Diet Concept
The basic concept of the Paleo Diet is to mimic the eating habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, the caveman.  Cavemen were pretty much the same as us genetically, and thrived on eating unprocessed foods that they could hunt and pick around them.  They were considered to be very healthy and free from disease.  Studies have indicated that following a Paleo Diet can reduce weight without resorting to calorie counting.

Food to Eat
We now know generally what food the Paleo Diet is based upon, but what specifically should we be eating.  Well, here are the main elements of a good Paleo Diet – meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, eggs, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, healthy fats and oils. When choosing meat, always go for the grass-fed and pasture raised cuts whenever you can.  Also, whenever possible, select the organic versions of products – they may be more expensive but will definitely help you stay healthy.

Food To Avoid
The things we shouldn’t be eating on a Paleo Diet are processed foods, soft drinks, sugar, grains, most dairy products, legumes, artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils, margarine and trans fats. In essence, anything which is made in a factory is a no-no. It’s important to read the food labels on the things you buy to identify what’s in them – many so-called healthy foods actually contain a lot of things that are unhealthy.

As the Paleo Diet has gained in popularity, there have been some developments in it.  Some things, such as bacon from pasture raised pigs, non-gluten rice and butter from grass-fed cattle, are now considered acceptable. Also, whilst water would be the drink of choice for Paleo enthusiasts, tea and coffee do contain high levels of antioxidants which are beneficial to our health and might be worth adding to your plan.

Not a Fad
The Paleo Diet may sound like the latest, greatest thing in dieting and just another new fad, but in fact it has been around for more than 2,000 years, despite this Paleo diet products and the Paleo diet food list contain the most modern and trendy items.

The Caveman Diet
The Paleo Diet is often dubbed ‘The Caveman Diet’ due to the concept it applies: that people should eat a diet as healthy as that of our ancestors, the caveman. That’s why the diet is surely the oldest known to mankind, it has been around as long as mankind has. Living Well is a good source of information on the Paleo Diet.

So, what exactly did cavemen (and cavewomen, of course) eat? Well, pretty much anything that could be hunted or gathered.  So that’s going to be meat, fish, nuts, seeds, plants and vegetables, eggs and oils made from nuts. No pasta, no cereals, no candies! Hamburger would be OK though, providing it’s made from meat from grass-fed cattle – and forget all the additives and preservatives found in your Big Mac or Whopper!

Actually, you might be surprised at what you can eat on a Paleo Diet.
If you’re a meat fiend, no problem – as long as it’s not highly processed or high in fat – so poultry (including turkey and chicken), pork (chops, veal, bacon), beef (ground beef, steaks), lamb, bison, rabbit and goat are all ok. As is rattlesnake, if that’s your poison!

If you’re more of a seafood person, on the menu can be crab, shrimp, oyster, lobster and so on.  Not into shellfish so much, how about salmon, sardines, tuna or trout?

As for vegetables, there is a pretty healthy list, including asparagus, avocado, carrots, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, peppers, cauliflower and sprouts. Even squash and sweet potatoes are acceptable.

Oils and Nuts
Oils made from nuts are a good food type to consider, so coconut oil, olive oil, macadamia oil, even avocado oil, are all acceptable. As well as oil made from nuts, nuts themselves are also an ingredient in the Paleo Diet. As well as those mentioned above, almonds, cashews, pecans, hazelnuts and walnuts are good.

Last, but certainly not least, are the members of the fruit family.  Apples, peaches. plum, mango, strawberries, oranges and bananas are amongst those you can enjoy.

As you can see, that’s a pretty lengthy list of foods you can partake of on your Paleo Diet.  And it’s by no means extensive, really just a tastier of what you can include in your Paleo Diet recipes and menus. Enjoy!
