There are two key elements to any successful health plan – a healthy balanced diet plan with balanced diet food and your exercise routine. Primal living bases itself on the basic concept that the food we eat should be natural and akin to that which our ancestors would have eaten – no grains and dairy products allowed – and having an exercise regimen based on outdoor activities and nature.  Living Well have a lot of great tips and advice on their website.

Running and Primal Living
Running is one of the base elements in any exercise programme, and primal living is no different in that respect.  The key difference with primal living running is that it isn’t done in the gym, on a treadmill, it’s done outside in nature, just as our ancestor the caveman used to when he was hunting his food.

Problems with Gym Running
The problem with running on a treadmill is that the surface is not natural, it’s too flat and consistent.  This means it’s first of all too easy and secondly, it’s not natural and how our feet were designed to be used when running. Running outside, on rough and uneven terrain is going to give you a much better workout, and help your feet work the way they should.

Footwear
Another important point to bear in mind is footwear. Of course, caveman didn’t have Nike’s or other types of footwear – in fact they didn’t really have any footwear and would hunt barefoot.  If that were possible, then primal living would suggest it, but the fact that we wear shoes all our days means it is impractical, and possibly dangerous, to suggest running barefoot outside.  That said, there are certain types of footwear that come close, such as the barefoot type shoe available in sportswear shops, the ones with the 5 toes design.  These allow your feet to move around relatively freely, and certainly allow movement in your toes which makes them the next best thing to barefoot running. The problem with most of the sports footwear is that they provide too much padding and protection, inhibiting your feet from moving naturally when running. And when running outside, they can actually cause harm because they don’t allow the foot to manoeuvre around uneven ans unstable surfaces, causing twists and strains and even broken bones.

What is Primal Living?
Primal living, for anyone not familiar with the term, is basically a diet and exercise regime which is based on eating food that would have been akin to that which our ancestors ate, with no processed products.  If it could be hunted or gathered then it would have been part of the diet.  Also, primal living encourages participants to spend time and exercise outdoors, in nature.

The Paleo Diet and Primal Living
Exponents of primal living will point out that the Paleo Diet, one of the key elements of primal living, is just that – a key element, but not the be all and end all of primal living. If you want a simple definition of what a Paleo Diet looks like, think of the caveman and his diet, if he couldn’t eat it, neither should you.  One of the issues that brings is that some of what we might consider as part of our basic food intake, things like bread and milk or even pasta, would not be considered true Paleo Diet foods.  It’s probably true to say some pragmatism is required on some points of the Paleo Diet.
That said, with the popularity of the Paleo Diet at the moment, there are plenty of different types of food that can be considered true Paleo. This would include meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and greens as well as anything else that can be got from the surroundings.

Benefits of Paleo Food
Paleo food is extremely nutritious, being full of amino acid, vitamins, minerals and much more.  These elements are great for muscle mass, fat loss, sleep, energy levels and even your IQ.  All of those body functions thrive on the types of things Paleo food provides.  If we compare that to the typical food found in the modern diet, processed food, sugar and non-productive calories, we can say that the elements much of these products contain provide little that our body can use to its benefit.  Even low fat diets become useless, removing the nutritious elements our body actually needs.Whilst our body can, and will, continue to keep going with a modern food diet, it will not be healthy – skin and hair quality will deteriorate, energy levels will go down as stress levels go up. Your body will simply not be getting the fuel it thrives on.

Fuel for our Body
As previously stated, the Paleo Diet is not primal living in itself, but it certainly is a key element in the primal living ethos.  The basic requirement of any machine, which the body ultimately is, is fuel and the food we eat is our fuel.

Definition

Starches

Dairy
Dairy products are an invaluable source of calcium and protein.  Milk, cheese, yoghurt are amongst the diary products you should consider consuming.  Another thing you should consider is to choose the low fat options for these products whenever you can. Soya based alternatives are worth considering as well.

Proteins
A good protein intake is essential for a healthy body.  Foods which are high in protein include pulses, beans, meat, fish and eggs.  They are also a good source of vitamins and minerals hence their value in a healthy diet. When choosing meat, try to select thin cut and skinless alternatives wherever possible.  For fish, try to eat at least twice a week, along with the pulses, beans and eggs mentioned.

Unsaturated Fats
When thinking about spreads, it’s important to go for the unsaturated fat products to reduce the risk of high cholesterol and give our body the required fat it needs.

Sugar
One last thing, try to reduce your sugar and saturated fat intake as much as you can.

Savour – whilst you may find this difficult at times, make sure you take time to enjoy what you’re eating, sit down and enjoy the event.  That’s a good way to avoid binge eating and having unscheduled snacks.

Accountability – it’s a great idea to involve someone else in your dieting, someone you have to report to daily to update on your progress.  That will make it harder to go off-track.

Reward – if you are too zealous in sticking to your diet, you will likely not keep to it for too long.  Give yourself some rewards, eat something you love once in a while if it’s not so healthy, and try to include things in your diet you enjoy and can look forward to each day.

Attitude – convince yourself that you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want but you won’t get healthier by doing that.  If you did, you wouldn’t be on a diet now, would you?

Suffer – strange as it may seem, train your body to accept a little suffering each day by skipping a meal. That way, your body will quickly build up an acceptance level of hunger and tolerate it better.

Recognize Habit – learn that it’s not just about the calories in the few crumbs you eat frequently, or the tiny helping of whatever you sneak, it’s the reason why you “cheat” like this that has the biggest impact on your diet.
